Leonardo da Vinci came from Rome with
his student da Metzi and three paintings -- Saint Anne, Saint John the Baptist
which he finished at le Clos Luce, and the most famous painting in the world ! Mona Lisa ,
also known as La Gioconda ... with her enigmatic smile.
Leonardo da Vinci was already sixty five years old. In this charming manor house of Clos Luce, he happily continued to paint, sketch, and work as an engineer, architect, and festival organizer for the King Francois 1 court in Amboise.

During his stay in Le Clos Luce , Leonardo da Vinci worked on a project draining the Sologne. He drew up plans for a Palace in Romorantin and is said to have imagined an ideal Castle for the King ...which inspired the architects of Chambord...and particularly had the idea of Chambord ' s unique double staircase.

Saint Hubert Chapel Amboise
After only three years in Clos Luce , near Amboise, Leonardo da Vinci died on May 2, 1519 and was buried in the Saint Florentin cloister , then moved to the Saint Hubert Chapel of the Amboise Castle where he still lies .
